SANDTON CITY ECOMOBILITY FESTIVAL PLANS

As many Sandton businesses are trying to manage the impact of the EcoMobility Festival in October, Sandton City continues to trade as usual from October 1-31.

Driven by the City of Johannesburg, this will be the world’s second-ever EcoMobility Festival. It will be celebrated by creating a month-long dedicated pedestrian zone in part of the Sandton CBD, Africa’s financial, business and leisure hub, to promote an ecomobile future for residents and visitors in Johannesburg.

While some streets will be partially closed, Sandton City, all the streets surrounding the shopping centre, and all the entrances and exits to parking areas will not be affected. The EcoMobility Festival is a City of Joburg initiative to encourage residents and commuters to Sandton to leave their cars at home and use environmentally friendly options like walking, cycling and public transport, in a bid to ease congestion on the busy roads of South Africa’s business centre.

From October 1-31, limited road access will apply in West Street, Gwen Lane, Maude Street and Stella Street. During this time, festival events will also be held on weekends and there promises to be a vibrant atmosphere throughout the Sandton CBD.

Sandton City’s rooftop parking on Level 8 will be one of the dedicated park-and-ride facilities during the EcoMobility Festival. Commuters can access the rooftop parking from Sandton Drive (up the ramp next to Tiger Wheel and Tyre) or Rivonia Road, park their cars for the day and walk to their offices or catch a taxi or tuk-tuk to their destination. A flat rate of R10 per day will apply.

To celebrate the EcoMobility Festival, there are gift cards worth R70 000 up for grabs for Sandton City shoppers! To win, Sandton City customers simply need to spend R500 or more at one shop, take their till slip to the Information Kiosk in the Checkers Court, fill in the entry form and hold thumbs – they could win a gift card valued at R10 000, R15 000 or a massive R25 000.

Sandton City stores will be open until 8pm Monday to Saturday and 6pm on Sundays and public holidays.
