SPECIAL KNEAD CAFÉ URGENTLY SEEKS NEW HOME

The urgent plight of special needs children in South Africa took a blow this month when the popular Special Knead Cafe in Bryanston had to temporarily shut down after four months.

The coffee and pastry shop – run by a dedicated staff of special needs children with backing from volunteers, parents, sponsors and the community-at-large, had become a friendly home-from-home for many at its premises at Fluffs & Tufts in Bryanston.

However, founder Kim Rundle explains that the café was recently made aware of the fact it was operating on council land that should never have been offered to it in the first place – however good the charitable intent may have been.

“We have had to move at short notice from our popular venue and as a community-based non-profit organisation dedicated to changing the world for special needs adults, we are now looking for a new home and hope to be up and running again soon.”

With the job market in a parlous state for many young children across South Africa there is an even more desperate need for job opportunities for special needs children.

“The talent and dedication of our 3 special needs staff, who took charge of the running of the café in such a professional way, together all our superb volunteers, has shone through as they found an avenue to follow their dreams and passions. It has been a wonderful time for the children and parents and we certainly see this as just the beginning of the next chapter in our journey.”

Since opening four months ago the Special Knead Café has provided a kind place for anyone needing a break to come and relax and have a quality cup of coffee in a place where they could feel they were part of the family.

“Fortunately, we have amazing sponsors and donors and our quality barista and baking equipment is being kept in storage until we have relocated. With the ongoing support and help of our sponsors and a caring community, we can truly make a difference together.”

Anyone who can potentially assist with finding a suitable new venue for the Special Knead Café in the Bryanston and Magalissig area is urged to call Kim Rundle on 082-415-1283.
