The first ever AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open took place in May 2015, and thanks to Jaguar, The Sandton Times had a chance to visit this Indian Ocean Island and experience Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort. A day filled with international golf, leisure activities and an exquisite dinner is lined-up with the highly prestigious British car brand.

8 May 2015: Up early and as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean, its the perfect time to take a walk along the beach and explore a little bit more of Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort with a bit more light. The air and sea breeze is gorgeous. The lagoon created by a natural reef barrier makes for a superb beach and space for snorkeling, wake-boarding and similar water sports.

Breakfast is hosted at Annabellas Restaurant, named after the wife of Charles Telfair, served buffet style in the traditional open kitchen. With some divine breads and cheeses, pastries and unique Mauritian foods, there’s an ample selection, all beautifully presented. The live kitchen atmosphere with a combination of a European and local breakfast offering, settles all morning hunger.

The fabulous room drop the night before includes Jaguar caps, golf shirts, sunscreen, lip cover and a USB with further information on the 2015 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. No need to worry about the dress code for the day – its been taken care of!

The butler appears after breakfast to do a quick tour of the Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort. This luxurious, oceanfront golf resort is a 4-minute walk from the Heritage Golf Club, 9 km from La Vallée Des Couleurs Nature Park and 16 km from the vibrant sand dunes at Seven Coloured Earths. A first stop at the Cavendish Bar and Lounge which is an early evening or late night delight, featuring an extensive menu of premium alcohol, cocktails and other elixirs, set to the sounds of a live band, exposed to the fresh air, thanks to its very open design. The thought of drinking french champagne from 11am to 11pm, never-mind all the meals that are included in the all inclusive package, is a foodies delight.

On-wards through to the 12 restaurants and then the very inviting spa, set partly indoors and mostly outdoors, with some amazing facilities for couples to relax away in privacy. Start a treatment off with a couples massage and then enjoy the spa baths or just relax in a romantic candle setting together in the warm, fresh air under an Indian Ocean sky. It really is a must when visiting Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort.

For those loving water sports, there is plenty to do in and around the resort or for those who just love the sun, there is plenty of white beach space to simply park-off and switch-off completely. The beach club has some great palm-tree space with different spaces to relax. From here it is a few steps to rent a paddle boat or other water sport equipment and get out into the crystal blue ocean.

One of the great features of staying on an all inclusive package, is the fact that most drinks, meals and select mini bar items are covered, hence having more than one pizza paired with one or more glasses of French champagne is more than alright. The three cheese pizza with spinach, accompanied with a glass of bubbly, served on one of the beach sofa, under a palm tree, overlooking the crystal blue Indian Ocean at tropical temperatures is as close to a perfect day as it can possibly ever get! Leave the smartphone locked up in the room.

Sun sets and a beach cocktail is about to get started. Welcome drinks are served in actual coconuts, paired with canapes and great conversation. It doesn’t get more tropical island than this as the warm sea breeze blows in over the pre-dinner party.

Dinner is at the elegant sea-facing Gin’ja Restaurant with its colourful pan-Asian cooking and 2-meter long sushi board, brought to the table by three waiters. It’s a magical evening as later, a 3-man band appears and starts singing some old favourites backed by a guitar and trumpets. Dinner guests move beyond tapping their feet and hit the beach sand dance floor as the trio take requests. Celebrations move late into the night and for those looking for something less rustic, the party continued at the beach club with full lighting, sound and DJ’s till early in the morning.

The 2-day visit to Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort is over too soon. It is a trip never to be forgotten and the hospitality of the team at the resort goes beyond words. Can’t help to shed a little tear as the Range Rover door closes and it is time to head to the airport. Hope to be back again soon!
